Commercial CIBIL Report: Company Credit Score (CMR) Explained
Your business has a credit file too. Here's what the commercial CIBIL report and CMR rank show, and how your own score fits in.
A commercial CIBIL report is TransUnion CIBIL's credit file on a business, not a person. For eligible MSMEs it carries a CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR) from 1 to 10, where CMR-1 is the least risky. Your personal CIBIL score, from 300 to 900, is a separate file.
Key TakeawaysThe CMR predicts the chance of an MSME turning into a non-performing asset within 12 months (TransUnion CIBIL).Since April 2020 it also covers businesses with credit exposure below Rs 10 lakh (TransUnion CIBIL).The RBI's free annual credit report right covers individuals, not companies (RBI).Lenders usually read a small-business owner's personal report too.

Two different files, often read side by side.
What Is a Commercial CIBIL Report?
A commercial CIBIL report, also called a Company Credit Report (CCR), is the credit history of a business as TransUnion CIBIL records it. Lenders send the bureau data on the business's term loans, cash credit and overdraft limits, guarantees and repayment behaviour. The bureau compiles it into one file, much like your personal report.
Most kinds of business entity can have one: private and public limited companies, partnerships, LLPs and proprietorships. Lenders pull the file when the business applies for credit.
Lenders don't report only to CIBIL. Under the RBI's 2025 Master Direction on credit information reporting, banks and NBFCs must submit data on all their borrowers to all four credit bureaus, using a separate commercial format for business accounts (RBI). Those four are listed on the RBI's list of credit information companies: TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark. So "commercial CIBIL" is really one of four business credit reports. Equifax, for instance, publishes its own Commercial Credit Information Report and a Commercial Rank (Equifax).

GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your personal Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score. GroScore doesn't show company or commercial credit reports, and it isn't a lender. The number it shows is your Equifax score, not a CIBIL score.

Commercial CIBIL vs Your Personal CIBIL Score
People mix these up all the time. Here's how they differ:
| Commercial credit report | Personal credit report | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose record | A business entity | You, as an individual |
| Main identifiers | Business details such as PAN, CIN or GSTIN | Your PAN and personal details |
| Headline number | CIBIL Rank (CMR), 1 to 10, lower is better | Credit score, 300 to 900, higher is better |
| What it predicts | Chance of the business loan turning NPA in 12 months (TransUnion CIBIL) | How reliably you repay |
| Free annual copy under RBI rules | No, that right covers individuals | Yes, one free full report per bureau each year |
Section 9 of the RBI's Master Direction on credit information reporting (2025) grants the free report to individuals whose score a bureau holds. For a business, a full commercial report is usually a paid product.
What Is a Good CMR Rank?
Lower is better. The CMR is the closest thing to a credit score for a company, and TransUnion CIBIL assigns CMR-1 to the least risky MSMEs and CMR-10 to the most risky, based on the business's credit history (TransUnion CIBIL, April 2020).
Lenders set their own cut-offs, and the bureau doesn't publish a single "good" line. In practice, many lenders read the ranks roughly like this:
| CMR rank | How lenders often read it |
|---|---|
| CMR-1 to CMR-3 | Low risk. Usually the smoothest path to business credit. |
| CMR-4 to CMR-6 | Moderate risk. Credit is possible, often with more checks or collateral. |
| CMR-7 to CMR-10 | High risk. Approvals get hard, and terms are stricter. |
Indicative reading, not bureau- or lender-published, as of October 2026. Actual decisions vary by lender, business financials and credit profile.

Indicative bands. Each lender draws its own line.
Not every business gets a rank. When TransUnion CIBIL extended the CMR in April 2020, it said about 90 lakh MSMEs had become eligible, including 55 lakh very small businesses with credit exposure under Rs 10 lakh (TransUnion CIBIL). A business with too little credit history may show no rank, which isn't the same as a bad one.
How Can a Company Check Its Credit Score?
There's no free annual entitlement for businesses, so expect a paid report. The usual route to a company CIBIL report runs through TransUnion CIBIL's website (cibil.com), and it looks like this:
- Choose the company credit report option on the bureau's site.
- Enter business details, such as the entity's PAN, CIN or GSTIN, and contact details.
- Upload KYC documents for the entity and the authorised person.
- Pay the fee and wait for the report by email.

Four steps to see what lenders see about your business.
Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark sell a business credit report too, so a free company credit report is rare. When a lender runs a business credit check, it pulls one of these files. You can also ask your bank's relationship manager what the business report showed after an application. Proprietors should check their personal report as well, which is free once a year from each bureau.
Does Your Personal CIBIL Score Affect a Business Loan?
Often, yes, and for small businesses it can matter as much as the commercial report. A proprietorship isn't a separate legal person, so lenders usually look at the owner's personal credit report alongside any business file. For partnerships and private companies, lenders commonly check the partners' or directors' reports too, especially when they give a personal guarantee.
Standing as guarantor cuts both ways. A business facility you back as guarantor can appear on your personal report as a guarantor account. Missed payments on it can then show up on your own file.
So a strong CMR with a weak personal score, or the other way round, can still slow a business application. Our page on the CIBIL score needed for a loan covers the personal cut-offs lenders tend to use. Each lender still decides on its own criteria.
What Lowers a Company's Credit Rank?
Business rank factors look a lot like the personal ones. Equifax names five that drive its Commercial Rank, which predicts a 90+ days-past-due default within 12 months (Equifax, retrieved 2026-10-06):
- Past delinquencies on any facility weigh against the business.
- Term loan repayment history shows whether EMIs were paid on time.
- Extreme stress in related trades counts, even if your own account looks fine.
- The number of active loans matters, since many open facilities can signal strain.
- Total credit utilisation shows how close the business runs to its limits.

Five things that pull a business rank down.
Utilisation trips up many small businesses. A cash credit or overdraft limit that's always drawn to the maximum reads as strain, even if interest is paid on time. Overdue days work the same way they do for people. A business account that falls overdue moves through the special mention account codes before it turns non-performing at 90 days. Our guide to the DPD and STD codes in your CIBIL report decodes SMA-0, SMA-1 and SMA-2.
Worked Example: What Would a Credit Coach Flag?
Here's an illustrative example. Say Sunita, 41, runs a garment shop as a sole proprietor and wants to raise her working-capital limit. Her personal Equifax score is 702. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, can't see her company report, but he reads her personal report with her and flags three things, in this order:
- The shop's overdraft is reported under her own name, at 96% of its Rs 3 lakh limit (an indicative figure for this example). Bringing it down before applying is the quickest fix.
- A guarantor account for her brother's vehicle finance shows a DPD of 30 from four months ago. She signed as guarantor, so it sits on her file. She can ask him to clear the overdue and keep the account current.
- A business loan she closed last year still shows as active. If the lender didn't report the closure, it's an error she can dispute with the bureau.

Illustrative example: the owner's report is often the first file a lender reads.
Arjun doesn't promise a limit increase, because the lender decides. He also suggests Sunita buy her business's commercial report from a bureau before she applies, so nothing in it surprises her.
Spotted a genuine error on a commercial report? Raise a dispute with the bureau that holds it. Accurate negative entries can't be removed early, whatever a "credit repair" agency promises. The RBI's deadlines for fixing personal reports are set out in our summary of RBI credit score rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a commercial CIBIL report?
It's TransUnion CIBIL's credit report on a business, also called a Company Credit Report. It lists the entity's loans, credit lines, guarantees and repayment record, and for eligible MSMEs a CIBIL MSME Rank from 1 to 10. Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark keep their own commercial reports too.
What is a good CMR rank?
Lower is better: CMR-1 is the least risky and CMR-10 the most. Many lenders treat CMR-1 to CMR-3 as low risk, but that reading is indicative, and each lender sets its own cut-off.
Does my personal CIBIL score affect my business loan?
Usually, yes. For proprietors, the business and the owner are legally the same, so lenders read your personal report. For partnerships and companies, lenders often check partners' or directors' reports, especially when they sign a personal guarantee.
How can a company check its credit score?
Buy a company credit report from a bureau such as TransUnion CIBIL by entering business details, submitting KYC and paying a fee. RBI's free annual report right covers individuals, so a free company credit report is uncommon. Owners can check their personal reports free once a year from each bureau.
The Bottom Line
A commercial CIBIL report is your business's credit file, and the CMR condenses it into a rank where 1 is best. Lenders read it next to your personal report, especially if you own a small business or sign guarantees. Keep credit lines below their limits, keep business EMIs on time, and check both files before you apply. Your personal report is the one you can check free today.
