Equifax Credit Score India: How to Check It and What It Means

An Equifax credit score is a number from 300 to 900 that Equifax, one of India's four RBI-registered credit bureaus, calculates from your credit report. Higher is better. You can check it free once a year on Equifax's website, or any time on an app like GroScore, which shows your Equifax score with a soft check.

The basics of your Equifax score in India, on one card.

What Is an Equifax Credit Score?

An Equifax credit score is your creditworthiness, as Equifax sees it, squeezed into three digits. Equifax Credit Information Services Pvt Ltd runs the bureau in India from Mumbai. Banks and NBFCs send it data on your loans and cards, it builds your Equifax credit report from that data, and its model turns the report into a score.

Equifax's own FAQ describes the score as "a statistical number that depicts a person's creditworthiness." Lenders read it, along with the report, to decide whether to lend and on what terms.

So there are two things to know about: the score and the Equifax report behind it. The report is a record of every loan and card in your name, how you've repaid each month and which lenders have checked you. If you want the full walk-through of a report's sections, the CIBIL report guide explains each one, and the layout is much the same at Equifax.

GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains in Hindi or English what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender. It also isn't Equifax itself: it pulls your Equifax report with your consent and explains it.

Equifax Credit Score Range: What 300 to 900 Means

The Equifax score runs from 300 to 900, and 900 is the best (Equifax). Equifax doesn't publish lender cut-offs, because each lender sets its own. GroScore's guidance reads the bands like this:

Equifax score Band What it usually means
300 to 599 Poor Approvals get hard. Offers that do come cost more.
600 to 749 Fair Credit is possible, often at higher rates or lower limits.
750 to 900 Good Lenders compete for you. Better rates are common.

Treat these bands as a guide, not a rule. A 760 doesn't guarantee approval. Income, existing EMIs and your job count too. Actual offers vary by lender, income and credit profile.

New to credit? Then Equifax may have nothing to score yet. That isn't a bad score. It's a blank page.

Is the Equifax Score Accepted by Banks in India?

Yes. Equifax is one of only four credit information companies registered with the RBI, according to the RBI's list of credit information companies. The other three are TransUnion CIBIL, Experian and CRIF High Mark. Our side-by-side of CIBIL vs Experian vs Equifax vs CRIF shows how the four differ.

Banks and NBFCs report your accounts to these bureaus and pull reports from them when you apply. Each lender decides which bureau to check. Some use CIBIL, some use Equifax, and many look at more than one.

What matters more than the logo on the report is what's in it. A late payment shows up at every bureau the lender reports to. Fix the behaviour and every score moves in the same direction, usually.

Why Is Your Equifax Score Different From Your CIBIL Score?

Because each bureau runs its own model. Equifax puts it directly in its FAQ: all bureaus share the 300-900 range, but "each Bureau uses their proprietary scoring model," so you'll likely have a different score at each. If a lender pulls Experian instead, you can check your Experian score for free as well.

Other reasons the numbers drift apart:

  • A lender may report to one bureau a few days before another.
  • An account may be missing, or wrong, at one bureau and not the others.
  • One bureau may have counted a recent enquiry that another hasn't yet.

Here's an illustrative example. The scores below are made up to show how a gap happens.

Illustrative example: Equifax score 742 and CIBIL score 758 for the same person, with the reasons for the gap

Illustrative example: same person, two bureaus, a 16-point gap.

Say Kavya checks both and sees an Equifax credit score of 742 and a CIBIL score of 758. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, would look at her Equifax report and flag two things. A card payment she made last week hasn't been reported to Equifax yet, so her balance looks higher there. And a personal loan she closed in March still shows as active on that report. The first fixes itself at the next reporting cycle. The second is an error, so she should dispute it.

The gap itself isn't a problem. Equifax's FAQ makes the same point: lenders "typically have different score cut offs depending on which Bureau is providing the Score." Focus on making each report accurate. That includes your CRIF credit report, which may show yet another number.

How to Check Your Equifax Credit Score for Free

You have two free routes. Neither one lowers your score, because checking your own score is a soft enquiry.

1. Directly from Equifax. Every bureau must give you one free full credit report, with your score, once a calendar year (January to December) under RBI rules. On Equifax's site, it takes four steps:

Four steps to get your free Equifax credit report: create an account, verify with OTP, review your details, run your free report

Equifax's own four steps for the free annual report.

  1. Create an account with your email ID, mobile number and a password.
  2. Verify with the OTP Equifax sends you.
  3. Review your details: date of birth, address and an ID such as PAN or Aadhaar.
  4. Click "Run your Free Report" on your dashboard.

If the online route fails, Equifax also takes an offline request form with ID and address proof and says it shares the report within 7 days. More checks in the same year cost money on Equifax's site: ₹100 for one report, ₹450 for a quarterly plan or ₹900 for a yearly plan, as of October 2026 (equifax.co.in, retrieved 2026-10-05).

2. Through a credit score app. A free credit score check on an app gives you more than one look a year. GroScore shows your Equifax score and full report free, tracks it monthly, and alerts you to new enquiries, report errors and overdue payments (groscore.in).

How to Read Your Equifax Credit Report

Your Equifax report has the same building blocks as any Indian credit report:

Section What to look for
Personal details Name, date of birth, PAN. One wrong letter can mix in someone else's data.
Contact details Addresses and phone numbers you've never used
Account details Every loan and card, its balance, limit and monthly payment record
Enquiries Every lender that pulled your report after you applied

Two Equifax-specific points are worth knowing. If you stood guarantor on someone's loan, that loan appears on your report too, and their late payments affect your score (Equifax). Buy now, pay later (BNPL) purchases are usually funded by an NBFC, so they're reported as consumer loans as well (Equifax).

Your Equifax credit report doesn't include your savings, fixed deposits or salary. And old closed loans with a clean record stay on it, which Equifax's FAQ calls "actually beneficial."

How to Raise a Dispute With Equifax

Spot something wrong? A wrong balance, a loan you never took or a closed account showing open can all be disputed.

Checklist for an Equifax dispute: note the report order number, raise it online, expect 30 days, contact your lender if needed

What to have ready before you raise an Equifax dispute.

  1. Note your report number. Equifax asks for the "Report Order No" printed at the top left of your report.
  2. Raise the dispute online through Equifax's dispute form, or by email to its support team.
  3. Wait for the lender. Equifax tags the account "Under Dispute" and checks with the lender. It can only change the data once the lender confirms.
  4. Expect an answer in 30 days. That's the timeline the RBI credit score rules set for bureaus and lenders.
  5. Personal details like a wrong address are corrected through your lender, not the bureau.

Miss that 30-day RBI window, and you may be entitled to ₹100 for each day of delay, paid by whichever side caused it, according to Equifax's FAQ.

Disputes fix errors only. A late payment that really happened stays on your report, and nobody can delete it early. Treat any agency that offers to "clean" an accurate record for a fee as a scam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Equifax score accepted by banks in India?

Yes. Equifax is one of four RBI-registered credit bureaus, alongside TransUnion CIBIL, Experian and CRIF High Mark. Each lender chooses which bureau or bureaus it checks, and many use more than one.

What is a good Equifax credit score?

Equifax scores run from 300 to 900. GroScore's guidance treats 750 and above as good, 600 to 749 as fair and below 600 as poor. Each lender still sets its own cut-off.

How can I check my Equifax score for free?

Get your one free full report a calendar year from Equifax's website, using your email, mobile, OTP and PAN or Aadhaar. Or use an app like GroScore, which shows your Equifax score free with a soft check any time.

Why is my Equifax score different from CIBIL?

Each bureau uses its own scoring model, and lenders don't always report to every bureau on the same day. Small gaps are normal. A big one usually means one report has an error.

How do I raise a dispute with Equifax?

Raise it online through Equifax's dispute form with your report order number. Equifax checks with the lender, and the RBI timeline is 30 days. Only genuine errors can be corrected.

The Bottom Line

Your Equifax credit score is as official as your CIBIL score. It's the same 300 to 900 scale, built by an RBI-registered bureau that banks report to. The numbers won't match exactly, and they don't need to. Keep the report accurate, pay on time and keep card use under 30% of your limit (groscore.in, retrieved 2026-10-05). If your Equifax score sits in the fair band, a good credit score is usually a matter of time and steady habits, not tricks.
