CIBIL Score Check Free: How to Check Your Credit Score Online
Four bureaus, four free reports a year, and one rule: your own check never costs you points.
A free CIBIL score check takes about five minutes on cibil.com, the TransUnion CIBIL website. You enter your PAN, date of birth and mobile number, confirm an OTP, and get one free score and report a year. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry, so it never lowers it. Equifax, Experian and CRIF each give a free report too.
Key TakeawaysThe RBI requires each of the four credit bureaus to give you one free full credit report, with your score, every calendar year (RBI).Your CIBIL score comes only from TransUnion CIBIL. Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark calculate their own (RBI list of CICs).Checking your own score is a soft enquiry. It doesn't affect your score, however often you do it (groscore.in).Lenders now report to bureaus every week, so a check today is fresher than one was a few years ago (RBI).

Four bureaus, one free full report from each, every year.
How Do You Do a Free CIBIL Score Check?
Go to the source. To check your CIBIL score, you need TransUnion CIBIL itself, because only cibil.com can show you that exact number. If you're unsure what the number itself means, start with what a credit score is and come back.
Here's the CIBIL score check online route for the free annual report, as of October 2026:
- Open cibil.com and choose the free CIBIL score option.
- Create an account with your name, email and mobile number.
- Add your date of birth, gender, address and one ID number. PAN is the usual pick, though a passport or other listed ID also works.
- Verify the OTP sent to your mobile. You may also be asked a few questions about your loans or cards.
- Skip the paid plans. The site offers subscriptions first, and the free report sits below them.
Your score and report then open on the myCIBIL dashboard.

The free route is there. You just have to scroll past the paid plans.
One catch. CIBIL's free report resets each calendar year, not 12 months after your last one. Used it in February? Your next free one arrives on 1 January.

Four Free Routes: One Report From Each Bureau
Most people stop at CIBIL. You don't have to: you can check credit score free with all four bureaus. India has four credit information companies registered with the RBI, according to the RBI's list of credit information companies:
| Bureau | Free full report | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| TransUnion CIBIL | Once a calendar year | cibil.com |
| Equifax | Once a calendar year | equifax.co.in |
| Experian | Once a calendar year | experian.in |
| CRIF High Mark | Once a calendar year | crifhighmark.com |
The rule comes from the regulator, not the bureaus. Under the RBI's credit information rules (2025), every bureau must give you one free full credit report, score included, each calendar year.
So you have four free full reports a year, not one. Lenders don't always report to every bureau, and checking more than one is how you catch a loan that sits in only one file.

Does Checking Your Own Credit Score Lower It?
No. Never.
Your own check is a soft enquiry. Lenders can't see it and it carries no weight in your score. A hard enquiry is the check a bank or NBFC runs after you apply for a loan or card. Several in a few weeks can pull a score down a little, because you look hungry for credit.
| Soft enquiry | Hard enquiry | |
|---|---|---|
| Who triggers it | You, or an app with your consent | A lender, after you apply |
| Affects your score? | No | Can lower it a little, for a while |
| Visible to lenders? | No | Yes, on your report |
The real risk runs the other way. People who never check don't find the late payment, the wrong account or the loan someone else took in their name until a lender says no.
What You Need for a Credit Score Check Online
Every bureau and every legitimate app asks for roughly the same things:
- your PAN, the identifier your loans are filed under
- the mobile number linked to your loans, for the OTP
- your date of birth and full name as on your PAN
- your consent, because a bureau can share your report only with you or a lender you've authorised
Why the OTP? It proves the report is yours. A credit report lists every loan, card, address and phone number tied to your PAN, which is a fraudster's gift if anyone with a PAN could open it.

A genuine check asks for a few details and never asks you to share your OTP.
So treat "check any CIBIL score with just a PAN, no OTP" as a red flag, not a shortcut. Our step-by-step guide on how to check CIBIL score by PAN card covers the safe way and the scams to avoid. Two rules cover most of it. Never share an OTP with a caller. Never pay for a report the RBI says is free once a year.
Why Do Different Sites Show Different Scores?
You check CIBIL and see 742. A day later, an app shows an Equifax score of 768. Nobody's lying.

Illustrative: two bureaus, two models, two honest numbers.
Each bureau runs its own scoring model on its own data. If one lender reported a card payment to Equifax on the 3rd and to CIBIL on the 17th, the two files differ for two weeks. That timing gap is a big part of why credit scores differ between apps. Since 1 July 2026, lenders have had to report every week under RBI rules, which narrows those gaps but doesn't remove them.
GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains in Hindi or English what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender. The number it shows is your Equifax score, not your CIBIL score, so don't expect them to match to the point.
A small gap is normal. A big one, say 60 points, usually means an account is missing or wrong in one file. That's worth a closer look at the full CIBIL report, section by section.
A Year of Free Checks: A Coach's Plan
Here's an illustrative example. Meera, 30, wants a home loan in about a year. She's never checked her credit. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, suggests she stop treating the free reports as a once-a-year event and space them out.
| Month | Free report | Why then |
|---|---|---|
| January | TransUnion CIBIL | The report most banks quote |
| April | Experian | A second bureau's view of your file |
| July | CRIF High Mark | Spots accounts the other files miss |
| October | Equifax | Last bureau check before applying |

Illustrative: four free reports spaced three months apart.
The arithmetic is simple. Four bureaus times one free report each is four full reports a year. Spaced three months apart, Meera gets a full bureau check every quarter and pays nothing. In between, GroScore tracks her Equifax report monthly and alerts her to a new enquiry, an overdue payment or a possible error (groscore.in).
Her January report then decides what she fixes first:
- Any account she doesn't recognise. Errors can be disputed with the bureau.
- A card running above 30% of its limit. She can pay it down before the next statement.
- Old late payments. Accurate entries can't be removed early. They fade as on-time payments build up.
Errors are common enough to check for first. GroScore says about 1 in 5 reports, or 20%, carries one, and it advises keeping card use under 30% of the limit (groscore.in, retrieved 2026-10-05). If a bureau takes more than 30 days to resolve your complaint, RBI rules entitle you to Rs 100 a day in compensation.
No plan promises a number. What changes her score depends on what's on her report. And a fix won't show up the same day, so it helps to know when your credit score updates.
What to do after your CIBIL score check
A check is only useful if you act on it. Read the band first:
| Your score | What it usually means | Do this next |
|---|---|---|
| 750 to 900 | Good | Keep paying on time, keep card use low |
| 600 to 749 | Fair | Find the one or two items holding it back |
| 300 to 599 | Poor | Check for errors, then fix late payments |
| NH or -1 | No history yet | Build credit slowly, for example with a secured card |
GroScore's guidance sets these bands. Each lender sets its own cut-off, and your income and existing EMIs count too.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check my CIBIL score for free?
Go to cibil.com, register with your PAN, date of birth and mobile number, verify the OTP and pick the free annual report rather than a paid plan. You get one free CIBIL score and report each calendar year.
Does checking my own credit score reduce it?
No. Your own check is a soft enquiry, which lenders can't see and which doesn't count in your score. Only a lender's check after you apply for credit is a hard enquiry.
How often can I check my credit score for free?
Each bureau gives you one free full report a year under RBI rules, so four in total. Spread them three months apart and you get a full bureau check every quarter, at no cost.
Can I check my credit score with just my mobile number?
Not with the mobile number alone. Bureaus match your report to your PAN or another ID, then send an OTP to your mobile to confirm it's you. Any site offering a full score without that check isn't verifying who you are.
Which is the best free credit score check in India?
For your exact CIBIL score, only cibil.com shows it. For regular tracking, a free app with a soft check works well. GroScore, for example, shows your Equifax score and full report monthly. Using both covers two bureaus.
Why do different sites show different scores?
Each bureau has its own scoring model and its own data, and lenders report on different dates. A gap of a few points is normal. A big gap usually means an account is missing or wrong in one report.
