Written Off in CIBIL: Meaning and How to Fix It

A write-off is the lender's bookkeeping, not your pardon. Here's what the entry means, why recovery continues, and how to move it to a better status.

Written Off in CIBIL: Meaning and How to Fix It

Written off in CIBIL means your lender stopped counting an unpaid loan or card as an asset and booked it as a loss. It doesn't mean the debt is gone. You still owe it, recovery can continue, and the entry sits among the most serious marks a report can carry. The fix is to pay or settle, get it re-reported, and then rebuild.

Key TakeawaysA technical write-off is "only for accounting purposes", with no waiver of the lender's claim against you (RBI, 8 June 2023).After you pay, the status can change to "Post Write Off Closed" or "Post (WO) Settled", names set in the bureaus' uniform reporting format.A written-off status can stay on your report for up to seven years (CRIF High Mark, July 2026).An accurate write-off can't be deleted early. Only an error can be disputed.

What Does "Written Off" Mean on a Credit Report?

Here's the plain write off meaning: a business removes a debt it doesn't expect to collect from its books and records it as a loss. In banking, that debt is your loan.

So the write off meaning in CIBIL, and the loan written off meaning on your report, comes down to this. Your bank or NBFC tried to collect, the dues stayed unpaid for a long time, and it booked the balance as bad debt. A loan turns into a non-performing asset (NPA) once dues stay unpaid for more than 90 days (RBI). A write-off usually comes later, after more than 180 days of non-payment (CRIF High Mark).

You'll usually see it as "Written-off" in the account's status field. Some reports show "WO" or a status code instead. In the payment grid above it, you'll often find a long run of high DPD (days past due) figures, which is how the account got there.

CIBIL is one of four credit bureaus registered with the RBI, along with Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark. A lender that reports to all four will show the same write-off on every report you pull.

GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains in Hindi or English what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender. The number it shows is your Equifax score, not a CIBIL score, and it can't remove an accurate entry from any bureau.

A write-off is one of the heaviest reasons for a low CIBIL score, alongside settlements and long overdues. If yours fell sharply, this line is often the cause.

Does the Bank Forgive the Debt When It Writes Off a Loan?

No. A write-off changes the lender's balance sheet, not your obligation.

The RBI spelled this out in its framework for compromise settlements and technical write-offs. A technical write-off covers non-performing loans that "remain outstanding at borrowers' loan account level" but are written off "only for accounting purposes", without any waiver of claims and without prejudice to recovery (RBI circular, 8 June 2023).

Why do banks do it, then? A bad debt write off cleans up the balance sheet. Money already set aside for the loss gets used, and the bank's books stop showing an asset it doesn't expect to recover. Your account stays open for collection.

Myth versus reality: a written-off loan is not forgiven; it is bookkeeping and you still owe the money

A write-off moves the loan off the lender's books, not off your shoulders.

In practice, that means you can still get collection calls, legal notices or a recovery suit after a write-off. Agents must follow the RBI's conduct rules, so harassment is never allowed. Silence from the lender doesn't mean the claim died either.

Written Off vs Settled vs Closed: Which Is Worse?

A written-off status with nothing paid is usually read as worse than settled. With settled, the lender took a loss but you paid something and the account is finished. With an open write-off, the lender lost money and you haven't resolved it at all.

Here's how the common statuses compare. The status names come from the uniform credit reporting format the bureaus publish (Experian, version 3.73).

Status on report What happened How lenders tend to read it Can it improve?
Written-off Unpaid, booked as a loss Most serious: unresolved loss Yes, by paying or settling
Post (WO) Settled Paid less than owed, after write-off Resolved, but lender still lost money Only if the lender agrees to take the rest
Settled Paid less than owed, by agreement Lender took a loss Same as above
Post Write Off Closed Paid in full, after write-off Late, but fully repaid Already the best outcome after a write-off
Closed Paid in full, as agreed Clean Already clean
Account statuses around a write-off on a credit report: closed, post write off closed, post WO settled, settled and written-off compared

Paying in full after a write-off earns a different status from settling.

Each lender weighs these in its own way, so this table is a general guide, not a rule. The full code list, including DPD and SUB, DBT and LSS, is decoded in our guide to CIBIL report account status codes.

Written-Off Amount (Total) vs Written-Off Amount (Principal)

Two fields sit beside a written-off status, and they tell you how much the lender lost. The written-off amount (principal) is the loan principal the lender wrote off. The written-off amount (total) is that principal plus the interest written off (CRIF High Mark).

Under the bureaus' reporting format, lenders fill these fields when the status is written-off, settled, post write-off settled or post write-off closed (Experian, version 3.73). So the numbers can stay on your report even after you pay. They record the loss at the time, not what you owe today.

Read them with care:

  • If the total looks far higher than anything you borrowed, ask the lender for the account statement.
  • If the principal figure doesn't match your records, that's a factual question you can dispute.
  • A "balance written off" of zero alongside a written-off status usually signals a reporting mistake.

Our CIBIL report guide shows where each of these fields sits on the account page.

How Long Does a Write-Off Stay on Your Report?

A written-off status can stay on your report for up to seven years, according to CRIF High Mark (July 2026). No RBI rule lets an accurate entry be deleted early, and bureaus keep years of account history.

Its weight changes, though. A write-off from five years ago, followed by clean accounts, hurts far less than one from last year. The status can also change once you deal with the dues, which is the part you control. The history of missed payments before it stays.

Lenders now report to bureaus weekly, under RBI rules in force since 1 July 2026. Once a lender updates your status, it should appear on your report sooner than it used to.

Written Off in CIBIL: Can You Clear It? The Honest Answer

You can't delete an accurate write-off early, and nobody else can either. That includes the bureau, your bank and any agency that charges a fee to "clean" your CIBIL. You can, however, change the status from an open write-off to a resolved one.

So the real answer to how to remove written off from CIBIL is that you don't remove it. You resolve it. Here's how to clear a write off in CIBIL, in order.

How to clear a write-off: get the dues in writing, pay in full or settle, collect the NOC, check the report and dispute errors

Resolve the dues first. The report follows.

  1. Get the dues in writing. Write to the lender's collections or grievance team and ask for the exact amount, split into principal, interest and charges.
  2. Choose: pay in full or settle. Paying in full can earn "Post Write Off Closed". Settling for less usually brings "Post (WO) Settled".
  3. Collect the paperwork. Get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or No Dues Certificate, plus the settlement letter if you settled. Ask in writing that the lender report the new status to every bureau.
  4. Check your report, then dispute errors. If the status hasn't changed a few weeks after the lender confirms, raise a dispute with the bureau, attaching the NOC.

Disputes are for mistakes only. Our step-by-step guide to raise a CIBIL dispute covers each bureau. Under the RBI's Master Direction on credit information reporting (2025), a complaint not resolved within 30 days earns you Rs 100 for each day of delay.

Is it better to pay in full or settle?

Pay in full if you can. Settle only if full payment would mean new high-cost borrowing. Here's an illustrative example with the arithmetic.

Kiran's personal loan went unpaid after a job loss and was written off. Her report shows a written-off amount (total) of Rs 1,64,000 and a written-off amount (principal) of Rs 1,40,000. The interest part works out to Rs 24,000 (Rs 1,64,000 − Rs 1,40,000).

  • Pay in full: Rs 1,64,000, plus any charges in the lender's written quote. The status can move to "Post Write Off Closed".
  • Settle: the lender offers Rs 1,00,000. The waived Rs 64,000 (Rs 1,64,000 − Rs 1,00,000) stays a recorded loss, and the status usually reads "Post (WO) Settled".
Illustrative write-off example: written-off total Rs 1,64,000, principal Rs 1,40,000, interest Rs 24,000, settlement offer Rs 1,00,000, waived Rs 64,000

Illustrative example. Your lender sets its own quote, or may refuse to settle.

Settling saves Kiran Rs 64,000 today. It also leaves a settled tag that many lenders read as a loss for years. If she plans a home loan, paying in full may be worth it. If paying means a new high-interest loan, it isn't. Our guide on how to improve your CIBIL score after settlement covers the path if you've already settled. All figures here are illustrative, and actual terms vary by lender.

One more rule matters. After a compromise settlement, the RBI sets a cooling period of at least 12 months, for non-farm loans, before the same lender takes on fresh exposure to you (RBI, June 2023). Each lender's board-approved policy sets the period after a technical write-off.

Can You Get a Loan or Credit Card With a Written-Off Account?

Getting new credit is hard, but not always impossible. Many RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs decline unsecured loans and cards while an open write-off sits on your report. Some look again once it's resolved and newer accounts show on-time payments.

Secured credit is the usual way back in:

  1. A secured credit card against a fixed deposit.
  2. A gold loan or a loan against an FD, from a bank or RBI-registered NBFC.

Both carry less risk for the lender, so a past write-off counts for less. Neither is guaranteed, because each lender sets its own rules. Be wary of any app promising a loan "for CIBIL defaulters" in return for an upfront fee.

GroScore can show which lenders' criteria your profile clears, across 100+ loans and credit cards from 60+ banks and NBFCs (groscore.in). It doesn't lend, and it can't promise an approval.

What Would GroScore's Credit Coach Flag on Your Report?

Here's an illustrative example. Suresh, 34, finds "Written-off" against a credit card he stopped paying three years ago. His Equifax score is 584. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, reads the report with him and flags these, in order:

  1. The card's status. It still reads "Written-off" with nothing paid. Resolving it is the first job, and Suresh asks the issuer for a written quote.
  2. The written-off amounts. The total includes late fees he believes were reversed. He asks for the statement before paying anything.
  3. A personal loan he closed last year. It still shows an outstanding balance. That's an error, so he can dispute it with the bureau, NOC in hand.
  4. His one active account. A small card with clean payments for 18 months. Keeping its use under 30% of the limit (GroScore guidance, retrieved 2026-10-12) protects the good history he has.
What a credit coach checks first after a write-off: paid account still shown as written-off, wrong amounts, duplicate loans, saved NOC, on-time new accounts

Check the facts before you pay, and keep every letter.

Arjun can't remove the write-off, and nobody can. He can show Suresh which step moves his report most. GroScore says about 1 in 5 credit reports carries an error, roughly 20% (groscore.in, retrieved 2026-10-12), which is why the duplicate check comes before any payment.

A rebuild plan after a write-off

Once the dues are resolved, the plan is slow and simple:

  1. Pull all four reports. You're entitled to one free full report with score from each bureau every calendar year (RBI). Confirm the new status shows on each.
  2. Add one secured card. Use under 30% of the limit (GroScore guidance) and pay the full bill every month.
  3. Wait before big applications. Let the clean months build up. A rejection adds a hard enquiry and helps nothing.

Our guide on how to improve your CIBIL score after a default sets out the full rebuild order. Results depend on what else is on your report and aren't guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a written-off account be removed from my CIBIL report?

No, an accurate entry stays. You can change it from an open write-off to "Post Write Off Closed" by paying in full, or "Post (WO) Settled" by settling. Only a factual error, such as a wrong amount or a loan that isn't yours, can be disputed and corrected. If the fix takes longer than 30 days, RBI rules from 2025 entitle you to Rs 100 for each day of delay.

Does the lender stop recovery after writing off a loan?

No. The RBI calls a technical write-off an accounting step that involves no waiver of the lender's claim. The lender can keep calling, send notices or go to court, but recovery agents must follow RBI conduct rules and can't harass you.

Is it better to settle or pay in full after a write-off?

Pay in full if you can do it without new expensive debt. A full payment can earn "Post Write Off Closed", which lenders usually read better than a settled status. Settle when full payment isn't realistic, and get every figure in writing first.

How long does a write-off affect my credit score?

Its effect is heaviest in the first few years and fades as new on-time history builds. The status itself can remain for up to seven years, per CRIF High Mark. There's no fixed date when a score recovers, because it depends on everything else on your report.

What does a technical write-off mean for me?

Nothing changes for you. The RBI's 2023 framework says a technical write-off involves no waiver of the lender's claims and does not stop recovery, so you still owe the money. The lender simply stops showing the loan as an asset in its accounts.

The Bottom Line

A write-off is your lender giving up on its books, not on you. Find the exact dues, pay in full if you can or settle if you must, keep the NOC, and check that every bureau updates the status. Then rebuild with small, secured credit. Check your free Equifax report on GroScore to see how the account is being reported today.
