CIBIL Dispute: How to Raise One and Fix Credit Report Errors
A wrong late payment or a loan you never took can cost you a loan. Here's how to get it corrected, and what the RBI says the bureau and lender owe you.
A CIBIL dispute is a free request to TransUnion CIBIL to correct a wrong entry on your credit report. You raise it online on CIBIL's website, CIBIL checks it with your lender, and under RBI rules the complaint must be resolved within 30 days. Miss that, and you're owed Rs 100 for every day of delay.
Key TakeawaysOnly errors can be disputed. Accurate late payments stay on your report, whoever promises otherwise. The lender gets 21 days to send corrected data and the whole complaint must close within 30 days, or you get Rs 100 a day (RBI).Each of the four bureaus runs its own dispute process. Fixing CIBIL doesn't fix Equifax.GroScore says about 1 in 5 credit reports carries an error (groscore.in).

Errors can be corrected. True entries can't be deleted early.
What Can You Dispute on Your Credit Report?
Anything that's wrong. Nothing that's right. Your credit report is the record of every loan and card in your name, and the credit score is calculated from it. If the report is wrong, the score is wrong too.
Common errors worth disputing:
| Error | What it looks like on the report |
|---|---|
| Wrong late payment | DPD (days past due) on a month you paid on time |
| Unknown account | A loan or card you never opened, sometimes a sign of fraud |
| Closed loan shown active | A loan you repaid still shows a balance or "Active" |
| Wrong personal details | Misspelt name, wrong date of birth, old address, wrong PAN |
| Duplicate account | The same loan listed twice, doubling your debt |
| Unknown enquiry | A lender's hard enquiry for a loan you never applied for |
What you can't dispute: a late payment that really happened, a loan you settled for less than you owed, or a default that's accurate. Those entries stay. They fade as you build clean months on top of them.
Here's a simple test. Ask, "Is this entry false?" If it's only unpleasant, a dispute won't help. Spotted a loan you don't recognise? First check your active loans so you know exactly what to dispute.
GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender and not a credit bureau, and the score it shows is your Equifax score, not a CIBIL score. CIBIL is one of four credit bureaus registered with the RBI, along with Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark. You can see all four on the RBI's list of credit information companies.
How to Raise a Dispute in CIBIL Online
You'll need a recent CIBIL report first. CIBIL says disputes are raised against a report from the last 60 days, so pull a fresh one if yours is older. Then follow the steps on CIBIL's consumer dispute page:

CIBIL's own process. It's free, and nobody needs to file it for you.
- Log in to your myCIBIL account on CIBIL's website.
- Open your credit report and go to the dispute centre.
- Pick the section with the error: personal details, contact details, an account or an enquiry. Choose the dispute type, such as ownership or a wrong value, and enter the correct detail.
- Submit. CIBIL emails you a dispute summary with a dispute ID.
Your report shows the disputed field as "Under Dispute" while it's checked. To follow your CIBIL dispute status, log in to myCIBIL; CIBIL also says it emails status updates every seven days. You can dispute several fields in one go, and the service is free (cibil.com, retrieved 2026-10-05).
Not sure which entry is wrong? Learn how to read your credit report section by section before you file, so you dispute the right field.
Documents to keep ready
The bureau doesn't decide alone. It asks your lender to confirm or correct the data. Your proof helps the lender check faster:
- a no-dues certificate or loan closure letter, for a closed loan
- bank statements showing the payment date, for a wrong late payment
- a PAN or Aadhaar copy, for wrong personal details
- a police complaint or cyber-crime report, for an account you never opened
How Long Does a CIBIL Dispute Take?
Up to 30 days under RBI rules, and less when the lender responds fast. The RBI's framework splits the time like this:
| Who | Time allowed | From when |
|---|---|---|
| Lender (credit institution) | 21 calendar days | Being told about the complaint |
| Credit bureau | The rest, up to 30 days in total | Your first filing |
| Compensation if late | Rs 100 per calendar day | After day 30 |
| Payment of compensation | Within 5 working days | Resolution of the complaint |
The rule began with an RBI circular of October 2023 and now sits in the RBI's credit information rules, consolidated in 2025. The lender pays if it took longer than 21 days to send corrected data. The bureau pays if the lender was on time but the bureau still missed day 30. Either way, you must be told what was done, and if your complaint is rejected, you must be told why (RBI).
The money goes straight to your bank account. You don't have to sue for it. For the wider picture, see our summary of RBI's credit reporting rules.
A worked example
Here's how the arithmetic works out, as an illustrative case. Priya files a dispute on 1 March about a closed loan showing active. Day 30 is 31 March. Her corrected report is sent on 15 April.

Illustrative example of the RBI's Rs 100-a-day compensation rule.
Priya's correction came 15 days past the deadline. At Rs 100 a day, she's owed Rs 1,500, paid within five working days of resolution. Who pays depends on where the delay happened.
How to Dispute With Equifax, Experian and CRIF
Each bureau keeps its own records. A lender that reported wrong data to one bureau often reported it to all four, so check each report and dispute on each one that shows the error.
- Equifax: use the consumer dispute resolution form on equifax.co.in. You'll need your credit report number and date, then pick the account and give the reason.
- Experian: raise it through the dispute or consumer support section of Experian India's official website.
- CRIF High Mark: use the dispute section on CRIF High Mark's official website.
The RBI's 30-day timeline and compensation rule apply to every bureau, not just CIBIL. You can get one free full report a year from each bureau to spot errors; see how to download your credit report as a PDF.
If you check on GroScore, you're looking at your Equifax report. When you spot an error there, the Equifax form is the place to dispute it. GroScore can't change any bureau's data itself, and it can't remove an accurate entry.

What If the Lender Doesn't Fix the Error?
Escalate, in this order:
- Write to the lender's grievance officer. Every bank and NBFC names one on its website. Quote your dispute ID.
- Wait for the outcome. If the bureau or lender rejects your complaint, they must give reasons. Read them; sometimes the lender needs a document you didn't send.
- Go to the RBI Ombudsman. If there's no reply within 30 days, or you're unhappy with the answer, file a complaint on the RBI's complaint management portal, cms.rbi.org.in.
Since 1 July 2026, complaints go under the Reserve Bank - Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which replaced the 2021 scheme. Credit bureaus are covered, as are banks and NBFCs (RBI). You also go to the Ombudsman if you're wrongly denied the Rs 100-a-day compensation.
What Would a Credit Coach Flag?
An illustrative case. Vikram, 34, sees a 648 on his Equifax report and can't work out why. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, goes through it and flags three items, in order:
- A two-wheeler loan marked "Active" with Rs 18,000 outstanding. Vikram closed it in 2024 and has the closure letter. That's an error: dispute it with the bureau and send the letter to the lender.
- A DPD of 60 on a credit card in 2025. He did pay that bill late. It's accurate, so it stays. Disputing it would waste a month.
- Card utilisation of 65% (an indicative figure for this example). Not an error, but the quickest fix he controls, by paying down the balance before the statement date.
The order matters. The false entry gets disputed first, because its correction can change what lenders see. The true entry is left alone. The fix he controls starts the same week.

Only errors can be corrected, by you, for free.
Be wary of "credit repair" agencies. A bureau dispute costs nothing, and you can file it yourself. No agency can legally delete an accurate late payment or default, however much you pay. Raising false disputes doesn't work either, because the lender confirms the data. Our guide to credit repair services covers what they can and can't do.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I raise a dispute in CIBIL online?
Log in to myCIBIL, open your latest report, go to the dispute centre and choose the section with the error. Enter the correct detail and submit. CIBIL emails you a dispute ID you can use to track it.
How long does a CIBIL dispute take?
Under RBI rules, the lender gets 21 days to send corrected data and the whole complaint must be resolved within 30 days of your first filing. After that, you're owed Rs 100 for each day of delay.
Can I dispute a late payment that is correct?
No. Only errors can be disputed. An accurate late payment stays on your report, and its effect fades as you add months of on-time payments.
Will raising a dispute lower my score?
Raising a dispute doesn't lower your score. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry too. Your score changes only if the correction changes the data, which usually helps when the entry was wrong.
What if the lender doesn't fix the error?
Write to the lender's grievance officer with your dispute ID. If there's no reply within 30 days or you're unhappy with it, complain to the RBI Ombudsman through cms.rbi.org.in.
Can I raise a dispute with Equifax too?
Yes. Equifax has its own dispute form on its website, and you'll need your Equifax report number. A correction at CIBIL doesn't update Equifax, Experian or CRIF, so dispute with each bureau that shows the error.
The Bottom Line
Check all your reports, dispute only what's false, keep proof ready, and note your dispute ID. The RBI's 30-day clock and Rs 100-a-day compensation are on your side. If the lender stalls, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman rather than paying anyone to "repair" your score. And if Equifax is the bureau you check most, our guide to your Equifax credit score explains what that report shows.
