Debt Consolidation in India: Does It Improve Your Credit Score?
One loan to clear several debts can help your score or quietly hurt it. Here's how it plays out, what it costs and what to avoid.
Debt consolidation means using one new loan to pay off several debts, so you're left with a single EMI. It can improve your credit score over a few months, mainly by cutting how much of your card limits you use. Expect a small dip first, from the new application. The gain only lasts if the new rate is lower and the old cards stay paid off.
Key TakeawaysExpect a short dip from the hard enquiry, then possible gains as card balances fall. GroScore's guidance is to keep card use under 30% (groscore.in).Large card issuers list finance charges of up to 3.75% a month, or 45% a year (issuer MITCs, October 2026).Settlement isn't consolidation. A "Settled" status on your report affects your future credit prospects (Experian). The RBI has warned against unauthorised loan-waiver campaigns selling "debt waiver certificates" (RBI, December 2023).

The dip comes first. The gains depend on the next three steps.
How Does Debt Consolidation Work in India?
You borrow once and use the money to clear several debts, such as two or three credit cards and a small app loan. Then you owe one lender, on one date, at one rate. Lenders sell it as a debt consolidation loan or a bill consolidation loan, and some ads say loan consolidation loans.
You have three common debt consolidation options:
- A personal loan for debt consolidation. It's unsecured, usually with a fixed rate and EMI.
- A balance transfer credit card. You move a card's outstanding to another card with a lower rate for a set period.
- A secured loan. It could be a home loan top-up, a loan against property, a gold loan or a loan against an FD. Rates are lower because there's security, and so is your room for error.
Here's who is explaining this. GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains in Hindi or English what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender. It doesn't offer, approve or disburse any loan.
What about "CIBIL"? TransUnion CIBIL is one of four RBI-registered credit bureaus, alongside Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark. Scores across them are usually close but rarely identical, and GroScore shows your Equifax score, not a CIBIL score. For lender cut-offs, see the CIBIL score needed for a loan by loan type.

What Happens to Your Credit Score After You Consolidate?
Your score usually dips a little, then recovers gradually if you handle the new loan well. Three things move.
1. A hard enquiry and a new account
Applying adds a hard enquiry, and a brand-new loan lowers the average age of your accounts. Both can nudge the score down for a while. One application is normal. Five in a month reads as credit hunger.
2. Card utilisation falls
Utilisation is the share of your card limits in use, and it's where consolidation earns its keep. For example, clear ₹2 lakh of balances on cards with ₹2.5 lakh of combined limits, and it drops from 80% to near zero. The new loan doesn't count towards it, because bureaus read instalment debt differently from card debt. Lenders have reported to bureaus weekly since July 2026 (RBI), so a cleared card shows up sooner than it used to.
3. Payment history builds, or breaks
On-time payment matters most, and one EMI on one date is easier than four bills on four dates. Miss it, though, and GroScore says a single missed EMI can cost 50 to 100 points (groscore.in).
Two habits undo all of this: closing the old cards, which cuts your total limit and can shorten your credit history, and running them up again. If you remember one rule, keep utilisation under 30% once the cards are clear.
So does debt consolidation hurt your credit score? A little, at first. After that, it depends on your report and your habits. Nobody can promise a number.
Balance Transfer Credit Card vs Debt Consolidation Loan
Here's how each route changes your report, as of October 2026:
| Option | How it works | Effect on your report | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal loan for debt consolidation | One unsecured loan clears cards and app loans | Card use drops; adds a loan and a hard enquiry | Processing fee; foreclosure charge if fixed-rate |
| Balance transfer credit card | Moves the balance to another card at a promo rate | Debt stays on a card, so utilisation barely moves | Transfer fee; the card rate after the promo |
| Home loan top-up or loan against property | You borrow against your house | Card use drops; adds a secured loan | Your home is the security |
| Gold loan | You borrow against gold | Card use drops | Auction if you can't repay |
| Loan against an FD | You borrow against your deposit | Card use drops | Your savings stay locked |
Indicative, not lender-published. Actual offers vary by lender, income and credit profile.

The same debt has two very different effects on your utilisation.
A balance transfer suits one balance you can clear inside the promo window. If the debt outlasts the offer, it can revolve at up to 3.75% a month (issuer MITCs, October 2026). RBI rules make card issuers quote a separate APR for balance transfers where it differs from purchases (RBI). Read that number, not the banner.
A personal loan suits debt spread across several cards and apps. Under RBI's Key Facts Statement rules, in force for new retail loans since 1 October 2024, you see the all-in APR before you sign, and a fee missing from the statement can't be charged later without your explicit consent (RBI). Repaying an older loan early? Floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business use, sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, carry no prepayment charge, whatever the source of the money (RBI). Fixed-rate loans can.
With a low score, the rate you're offered may wipe out the gain. Our guide to a personal loan with a low CIBIL score covers the safer secured routes.
Worked Example: What Credit Card Debt Consolidation Saves
Here's an illustrative example. Say you owe ₹2,00,000 on two cards and want it cleared in 24 months. Large issuers charge up to 3.75% a month on revolving balances (issuer MITCs, retrieved 2026-10-09); this example uses 3.5%.
- Stay on the cards. Paying ₹12,455 a month, you'd pay about ₹98,910 in interest.
- Take a loan at 14% a year. The EMI works out to ₹9,603. Interest of ₹30,462 plus a 2% fee with 18% GST (₹4,720) comes to ₹35,182.
- Take a loan at 24% a year, a rate a weaker profile might be quoted as of October 2026. The EMI is ₹10,574, and interest of ₹53,781 plus the same fee comes to ₹58,501.

Illustrative example: the same ₹2 lakh can lead to three very different bills.
For example, at 14% you'd save ₹63,728, and at 24% you'd still save ₹40,409. Card interest also attracts 18% GST, left out here, so the real gap is wider. These illustrative figures use the standard EMI formula as of October 2026 and aren't offers. Actual offers vary by lender, income and credit profile, so compare them on the APR in the Key Fact Statement that RBI rules require.
The catch sits outside the table. If the cleared cards fill up again, you pay the new EMI and fresh card bills. That's how most consolidations fail.
Why Debt Settlement Is Not Debt Consolidation
Consolidation repays every rupee you owe. Settlement doesn't. The RBI's June 2023 framework describes a compromise settlement as a negotiated arrangement to settle a lender's claims in cash, which can mean the lender gives up part of what's due (RBI).
Your report shows the difference. A loan repaid in full reads "Closed". A settled one reads "Settled", which Experian says signals partial repayment and affects your future credit prospects (Experian). A lender that agrees a settlement on a non-farm loan must also wait a cooling period of at least 12 months before lending to you again (RBI).

Settled is a different word from Closed, and lenders read it that way.
Sometimes settlement is the only realistic option after months of missed payments. Make that call with your lender, in writing. Already settled? Here's how to improve your CIBIL score after a settlement, including when paying the shortfall can change the status.
How Do You Spot a Debt Relief Scam?
Search for debt consolidation companies and you'll find "debt relief" firms. The pitch: pay a fee, stop paying your EMIs, and they'll get your debt cut. Most aren't lenders and many aren't regulated by anyone.
The RBI has flagged this. In a December 2023 press release, it cautioned against unauthorised loan-waiver campaigns, including entities charging fees for "debt waiver certificates" they had no authority to issue (RBI).

Any one of these is reason enough to walk away.
Watch the fourth flag closely. Nobody can remove an accurate "Settled" tag early; only genuine errors can be disputed, as our guide to credit repair agencies explains.
Talk to your lender directly instead, and get any revised plan in writing. If a regulated lender doesn't resolve your complaint, escalate to the RBI's Complaint Management System (cms.rbi.org.in). Report unauthorised entities on the RBI's Sachet portal (sachet.rbi.org.in), and call the cybercrime helpline on 1930 if you've lost money.
What Would a Credit Coach Flag Before You Consolidate?
Here's an illustrative example. Say Sana, 33, carries the same ₹2 lakh of card debt, on two cards. Her Equifax score is 671. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, reads her report with her and flags three things, in this order:
- Both cards sit at 80% combined utilisation (an indicative figure for this example). A loan can bring that near zero, if both cards stay open and unused.
- Two loan enquiries last month came from offers she clicked through. The advice is to compare one or two Key Fact Statements and then stop, because each application is a hard enquiry, unlike your own check.
- A 30-day late payment on one card is four months old. It's correct, so it stays. An auto-debit on the new EMI can make it her last.

Illustrative example: utilisation only falls to zero if the cards stay empty.
At 671, Sana may be quoted more than someone at 760, which is why the 24% row matters. Arjun can't promise her a loan or a score, because lenders decide and every report is different.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a debt consolidation loan lower my CIBIL score at first?
Your score often dips a little. The application adds a hard enquiry and the new account lowers the average age of your credit, and CIBIL and Equifax scores react in similar ways. If the loan clears your card balances, lower utilisation can outweigh that dip over the following months, depending on your report.
Is a balance transfer better than a consolidation loan?
For one balance you can clear within the promo period, a balance transfer can cost less. For debt across several cards and apps, a loan usually suits your score better, because it clears the cards instead of moving the debt to another one.
Can I consolidate debt with a low credit score?
Sometimes you can, but expect fewer offers and higher rates. A gold loan or a loan against an FD leans less on your score, and a co-applicant with a strong profile can help. Check the APR first. For example, a 24% loan still saved ₹40,409 over cards in our worked example, but a higher rate saves less. The APR in the Key Fact Statement that RBI rules require is the number to compare.
Are debt consolidation companies in India safe?
In India, debt consolidation is a loan from an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC. Firms that charge you to "negotiate" with lenders are debt relief or settlement agencies rather than lenders. The RBI has warned against paid loan-waiver offers. Check any lender on the RBI's list of registered NBFCs before you share documents.
Should I close my credit cards after consolidating?
Usually you shouldn't. Closing a card cuts your total limit, which pushes utilisation up when you next spend, and closing an old card can shorten your credit history. If an annual fee makes one hard to justify, close the newest card first.
The Bottom Line
Debt consolidation is a tool, not a cure. Used well, it swaps costly card debt for one cheaper EMI, and your score can recover as utilisation falls and on-time payments build. Read the APR, keep the old cards open and empty, and never pay anyone to make debt disappear. Then make sure each repaid loan reads "Closed", as our guide to loan closure and your credit score explains.
