Low CIBIL Score Personal Loan: Safe Options That Work

A low score narrows your options, but it doesn't close them. Here are the safe routes, what they cost, and the traps to walk past.

Low CIBIL Score Personal Loan: Safe Options That Work

A low CIBIL score personal loan is possible, but it's harder and costs more. Below about 650, most banks decline unsecured loans, and the NBFCs that say yes charge higher rates. Your safer routes are a gold loan or loan against an FD, a co-applicant with a strong score, a smaller amount, or fixing your report before you apply. No regulated lender can promise approval.

Key TakeawaysGroScore's guidance treats below 600 as the zone where approvals get hard, and 750+ as good (groscore.in).Secured loans, backed by gold or a fixed deposit, lean far less on your score than an unsecured personal loan.Borrow only from RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs, or apps that name one as the lender. You can check both on the RBI website.Any offer of approval for everyone, with no credit check and an upfront fee, is a scam, not a shortcut.
Safe options for a loan with a low CIBIL score: gold loan, loan against FD, co-applicant, smaller NBFC loan, fix the report first

Five realistic routes, ranked from least to most dependent on your score.

Is a Low CIBIL Score Personal Loan Possible?

Sometimes. Whether you get a loan for low CIBIL score holders depends on how low, why, and what else you bring.

Here's the reality check first. A personal loan is unsecured: there's nothing for the lender to recover if you stop paying. So your credit report carries most of the weight. With a score in the low 600s or below, many banks won't approve an unsecured loan at all. Some NBFCs (non-banking financial companies) will look at scores lower than banks accept, but they price that risk into the interest rate and fees.

A note on who's writing this. GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains in Hindi or English what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender. It doesn't give, approve or disburse loans.

Also, "CIBIL" is one bureau, not all of them. TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax, Experian and CRIF High Mark are the four RBI-registered credit bureaus, and a lender may check any of them. The number GroScore shows is your Equifax score, not a CIBIL score. For what counts as low and why it happens, read our guide to a low CIBIL score.

Your score isn't the only thing lenders read. A steady salary, few existing EMIs and no late payments in the past year can tip a borderline case. That's why a personal loan for salaried with low CIBIL score profiles is more workable than for irregular earners. A recent default or a "written-off" status works the other way.

What no regulated lender will do is skip the check altogether.

Myth versus reality: no RBI-regulated lender offers guaranteed approval or skips the credit check

A promise that sounds too easy is the warning.

Safe Options for a Loan With a Low CIBIL Score

Each option suits a different borrower, so read the "avoid if" column as carefully as the rest.

Option How it works Suits you if Avoid if
Gold loan You pledge gold jewellery; the lender lends a portion of its value You own gold and need money for a short period You can't repay on time; the lender can auction the gold
Loan against FD You borrow against your own fixed deposit You have an FD you don't want to break The FD is your only emergency money
Co-applicant A family member with a strong score and income applies with you Someone trusts you and can share the repayment It could strain the relationship; a missed EMI hurts their score too
Smaller NBFC loan A lower amount from an RBI-registered NBFC Your need is small and your income is steady The rate or fees make the EMI hard to carry
Fix the report first Clear errors and high card balances, then apply The need can wait a few months The expense is genuinely urgent

Options as of October 2026. Costs and eligibility vary by lender, income and credit profile.

A few notes that change the picture:

Gold loans usually ask fewer questions about your score because the gold is the security. Repay on time, and the loan still gets reported to the bureaus, which can help rebuild your record. Miss payments, and you risk losing jewellery that may matter far more than the money.

A loan against an FD is often the cheapest route, usually priced a little above the FD's own rate. Your deposit keeps earning while it's pledged.

A secured credit card against an FD won't fund a big expense, but it's a well-trodden way to rebuild. See our guide to a credit card for a low CIBIL score.

Which Lenders Give Loans for a Low CIBIL Score?

For a low CIBIL personal loan or any loan for low credit score borrowers, look for low credit score lenders among RBI-regulated NBFCs and, for secured loans, banks. We don't name or rank lenders here, because eligibility changes often and depends on your whole profile. What matters more is checking that whoever lends to you is real.

Before you apply, run two checks:

  1. For an NBFC, search for it on the RBI's list of registered NBFCs.
  2. For a loan app, check the RBI's directory of digital lending apps, live on the RBI website since July 2025, and confirm which bank or NBFC actually funds the loan.

Searching for a "low CIBIL score loan app" or a "bad CIBIL loan provider" turns up plenty of apps that pass neither check. Skip them. A legitimate NBFC personal loan for low CIBIL score borrowers comes with a Key Fact Statement that shows the all-in annual percentage rate (APR) and every fee before you sign. RBI rules require it (RBI). Our guide to loan apps for a low CIBIL score covers what to check before you install one.

What Interest Rate Will You Pay With a Low Score?

Higher than someone with 750+, almost always. Lenders use risk-based pricing, and a low score puts you in a pricier bracket. That's why the type of loan matters as much as the lender.

Illustrative comparison: Rs 3 lakh over 3 years has an EMI of Rs 10,108 at 13% versus Rs 11,149 at 20%

Illustrative example: a secured rate against an unsecured one.

For example, take an illustrative ₹3 lakh loan over three years. At 13% a year, say for a secured loan, the EMI works out to ₹10,108 and total interest to ₹63,895. At 20%, a rate an unsecured lender might charge a low-score borrower, the EMI is ₹11,149 and total interest is ₹1,01,367. That's ₹37,472 more for the same ₹3 lakh. These are illustrative figures, worked out with the standard EMI formula as of October 2026. They aren't offers. Actual offers vary by lender, income and credit profile.

Look past the rate, too. Processing fees, insurance bundled into the loan and late-payment charges can add a lot to a ₹3 lakh loan. The APR in the Key Fact Statement, which RBI rules require lenders to share before you sign (RBI), is the number to compare.

Should You Fix Your Score Before Applying?

If the need can wait, usually yes. Every rejected application adds a hard enquiry to your report and changes nothing. Our guide to loans by CIBIL score band shows what opens up at each level. A cleaner report can open cheaper options, and errors are common: GroScore says about 1 in 5 reports carries one, roughly 20% (groscore.in, retrieved 2026-10-05).

Here's an illustrative example. For instance, say Sunita, 34, has an Equifax score of 590 and wants ₹2 lakh for a family expense in three months. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, reads her report with her and flags four things, in this order:

  1. A credit card at 95% of its limit (an indicative figure for this example). Paying it down is the fastest item she controls.
  2. A personal loan marked "settled" from four years ago. It's accurate, so nobody can remove it early. It fades as new on-time payments build up.
  3. An account she doesn't recognise. If it isn't hers, that's an error, and she can raise a dispute with the bureau.
  4. Five enquiries in two months from loan apps. The advice: stop applying.
Four steps to fix your report before applying for a loan: check the full report, pay down cards, dispute errors, apply once to a regulated lender

Fix first, apply once.

Why the card first? GroScore's guidance is to keep card use under 30% of the limit (groscore.in, retrieved 2026-10-05), and lenders have reported to bureaus every week since July 2026 (RBI). A paid-down balance can show up sooner than it used to. For the full rebuild plan, see how to improve your credit score.

GroScore can't guarantee Sunita a loan, and it can't erase the settled account. What it does is rank the fixes and show which lenders' criteria her profile clears across 100+ loans and cards from 60+ banks and NBFCs (groscore.in). The lender still decides.

How to Avoid Loan Scams That Target Low-Score Borrowers

People with a low score are the main target of fake loan apps. The pitch is always the same: "instant loan for low CIBIL score, money in minutes, no questions."

"Loan without CIBIL check" and "guaranteed approval" are a myth when the lender is regulated. Every RBI-regulated bank and NBFC checks a credit report. If someone says they won't, ask who's really lending. New to credit with no score at all? That's a different case, covered in our guide to a loan without a CIBIL score.

Watch for these red flags:

  • An upfront fee for "processing", "insurance" or "file charges" before any money reaches you, especially to a personal UPI ID
  • No named lender, or a name you can't find on the RBI's lists
  • Requests for access to your contacts, photos or gallery
  • Pressure to decide in minutes
  • Threats or abusive calls about repayment
Red flags of a fake loan app: upfront fee, no RBI-registered lender, access to contacts, pressure to decide fast

Any one of these is enough to walk away.

If something goes wrong, you have places to go. Report an unauthorised lender or app on the RBI's Sachet portal. If a regulated lender doesn't resolve your complaint, escalate to the RBI's Complaint Management System at cms.rbi.org.in. For fraud or harassment, call the national cybercrime helpline, 1930, or file at cybercrime.gov.in.

And if you've already paid a "fee" and the loan never came? Stop paying, keep the screenshots, and report it. Paying more never unlocks the money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a personal loan with a 550 or 600 CIBIL score?

An unsecured personal loan is hard to get from a regulated lender at 550 or 600, though not impossible with steady income. A gold loan, a loan against an FD or a strong co-applicant are more realistic. Check your report first, because one error or a maxed-out card could be dragging the number down.

Which lenders give loans for a low CIBIL score?

Some RBI-registered NBFCs consider lower scores than banks, at higher rates. Banks may lend against gold or an FD. Whoever you choose, check the lender on the RBI's NBFC list or its directory of digital lending apps before you share any documents.

What interest rate will I pay with a low score?

Usually more than a borrower with 750+, and the gap can be large. For example, on an illustrative ₹3 lakh, three-year loan, 20% instead of 13% costs about ₹37,000 more in interest. Compare the APR in each lender's Key Fact Statement, which RBI rules require.

Is a secured loan easier with a low score?

Yes, generally. A gold loan or loan against an FD is backed by something the lender can recover, so your score carries less weight. The risk moves to you: miss payments on a gold loan and you can lose the gold.

How do I avoid loan scams that target low-score borrowers?

Never pay an upfront fee to unlock a loan, and never borrow from an app that doesn't name an RBI-registered lender. Report suspicious apps on the RBI's Sachet portal, and call 1930 if you've been defrauded or harassed.

Should I fix my score before applying?

If you can wait, yes. Paying down card balances and disputing genuine errors can improve how your report reads, and fewer applications mean fewer hard enquiries. Results depend on what's on your report, and accurate negative entries can't be removed early.

The Bottom Line

A low CIBIL loan isn't out of reach, and a low score narrows your options without closing them. Start with what you already own (gold, an FD), consider a co-applicant you trust, and borrow the smallest amount that solves the problem. Check every lender on the RBI website, compare APRs, and never pay to unlock a loan. If you can wait, fixing the report first is the cheapest loan you'll ever get. Our guide to the CIBIL score for a personal loan shows what changes as your score climbs.
