Credit Score Experian India: Check Your Experian Score Free
Experian is one of India's four credit bureaus. Here's how its score works and how to see yours free.
Your credit score Experian calculates is a number from 300 to 900, where 900 is the best (Experian). Experian is one of India's four RBI-registered credit bureaus, and lenders read its score alongside the others. You can check your Experian score free on experian.in, which says you can pull free reports there any number of times a year.
Key TakeawaysThe Experian credit score runs from 300 to 900, with 900 the highest (Experian FAQ).Experian's FAQ says payment history and credit utilisation carry the most weight, followed by credit age and account mix.RBI rules guarantee one free full report a year from every bureau. Experian says it goes further and offers unlimited free reports on its website (Experian).GroScore shows your Equifax score, not your Experian score, and it isn't a lender.

Your Experian score basics fit on one card.
What Is an Experian Credit Score?
An Experian credit score is how Experian rates your borrowing record, turned into three digits. The bureau runs in India as Experian Credit Information Company of India Private Limited. Banks and NBFCs send it data on your loans and cards. It builds an Experian credit report from that data, and its model turns the report into a score.
The report is the evidence. The score is the summary. Experian's FAQ says the report holds your identifying details, your credit accounts with limits, balances and payment history, credit enquiries from the past two years, and any serious delinquencies.
Every Indian report follows roughly the same layout. If you've never read one, our credit report explained guide walks through each section, and it applies to an Experian report too.
GroScore is a free credit score app and personal credit coach from Vitrak Technologies (GroMo). It shows your Equifax credit score and full report with a soft check that never affects your score, explains in Hindi or English what is holding the score back, and gives a step-by-step plan to fix it. GroScore is not a lender, and it doesn't show your Experian score. For that, go to Experian directly.

Credit Score Experian Range: What 300 to 900 Means
Experian's FAQ puts it simply: "The credit score ranges from 300 to 900, 900 being the highest." Experian doesn't publish a "good" cut-off, because each lender sets its own. GroScore's guidance reads the bands like this (groscore.in):
| Experian score | Band | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| 300 to 599 | Poor | Approvals get hard. Offers that do come cost more. |
| 600 to 749 | Fair | Credit is possible, often at a higher rate or lower limit. |
| 750 to 900 | Good | Better rates and quicker decisions are common. |
A 770 is no promise of approval, though. Income, existing EMIs and your job count too. Actual offers vary by lender, income and credit profile.
What if Experian has nothing on you? Then you may see no score at all. That's a blank page, not a bad mark.
How to Check Your Experian Credit Score Free
Checking your own score is a soft enquiry. It never lowers your score, wherever you check.
On Experian's website. The RBI's rules make every bureau give you one free full credit report, with your score, once a calendar year. Experian's own FAQ goes further: "You can access unlimited number of free credit reports throughout the year on Experian website." So an Experian credit check free of charge isn't limited to once a year, as of October 2026 (experian.in, retrieved 2026-10-05).

Experian's free route takes four steps. Screens change, so follow the site's prompts.
- Open experian.in and tap "Get Free Credit Score".
- Fill in your details. Use the name, date of birth and PAN that match your loan records.
- Verify your mobile number with the OTP Experian sends.
- View your score and report, and save a copy.
Experian also publishes a credit report download guide on its site. The exact form fields can change, so check the bureau's site if a step looks different. If you want a PDF to keep, our guide to download your credit report covers saving and storing it safely.
On a credit score app. Some apps show an Experian score. GroScore doesn't. It shows your Equifax score and report, tracks them monthly and alerts you to new enquiries and possible errors (groscore.in). Because lenders report to every bureau, fixing a problem you spot on your Equifax report usually helps your Experian report too.
Is the Experian Score Used by Banks?
Yes. Experian is one of four credit information companies registered with the RBI, according to the RBI's list of credit information companies. The others are TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax and CRIF Credit Information Services, which most people still call CRIF High Mark.
RBI rules say every bank and NBFC must be a member of all four bureaus. Since 1 July 2026 they've reported your accounts weekly (RBI). Each lender chooses which report it actually pulls. Some check one bureau. Many check two.
So a weak Experian score can hurt you even when your CIBIL score looks fine. Don't ignore it just because CIBIL gets the headlines. The same goes for CRIF, and our CRIF High Mark score explainer covers that bureau.
What Moves Your Experian Score?
Experian is unusually open about this. Its FAQ lists four factors and how much each one matters:

Experian ranks payment history and utilisation as the factors that matter most.
| Factor | Impact (Experian FAQ) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Payment history | High | Every EMI and card bill paid by the due date |
| Credit exposure and utilisation | High | How much of your card limits you use |
| Age of credit | Medium | How long your accounts have been open |
| Types of account | Low | Your mix of secured and unsecured credit |
Two numbers are worth comparing here. Experian's FAQ suggests keeping utilisation below 40%. GroScore's guidance is tighter: under 30% (groscore.in). Aim for the lower one and you've satisfied both.
Experian also says that a hard enquiry, the check a lender runs after you apply, "might temporarily lower your credit score". Space out your applications. Our guide to how your credit score is calculated explains each factor in more depth.
Why did my Experian score change when nothing changed?
Experian has moved to a new version of its model, called v4. Its v4 FAQ says some people "may notice a change in their credit score compared to the previous version." That shift doesn't mean your profile got better or worse. The model now gives more weight to recent behaviour and trends.

A new scoring version can move the number on its own.
How to Increase Your Experian Score: A Worked Example
Here's an illustrative example. The person and figures are made up to show the arithmetic.
Say Neha, 27, checks her Experian score and sees 702. Arjun, GroScore's credit coach, would look at her report in this order:
- Utilisation. Her only card has a limit of ₹80,000 and a balance of ₹44,000. That's 55%. Her target for Experian's 40% mark is a balance of ₹32,000 or less. For GroScore's 30% mark, the target is ₹24,000 or less. Paying ₹20,000 before the statement date does both.
- Payment history. One 30-days-late payment from last year. It's accurate, so it stays. Every clean month after it weakens its effect.
- A loan she closed in March still showing as active. That's an error. She should raise a dispute.
Fix one is the fastest. Fix three removes a false debt. Fix two only needs time.

Illustrative example: one card has three balance targets worth knowing.
How much will her score move? Nobody can promise a number. It depends on what else is on her report and when lenders report next. Our credit utilisation ratio guide goes deeper on that first fix.
How to Raise a Dispute With Experian
Errors happen. A closed loan shown as open, a balance that's wrong or an account you never opened can all be challenged.
- Log in on Experian's site and open the "Dispute" section.
- Pick the account or detail that's wrong and explain the problem. Attach proof such as a no-dues certificate.
- Track the request. Experian's FAQ says that if you don't hear back within 5 days, write to its nodal officer. The address is on Experian's consumer FAQ.
Under RBI rules, the bureau and lender together get 30 days to resolve a complaint. After that, you're entitled to ₹100 for each calendar day of delay (RBI). Our guide to the RBI credit score rules covers this alongside the faster updates and alerts.
Disputes fix errors only. An accurate late payment stays on your report, and no agency can remove it early. Treat any offer to "clean" a true record for a fee as a scam.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good Experian credit score in India?
Experian scores run from 300 to 900, and Experian doesn't set a single "good" cut-off. GroScore's guidance treats 750 and above as good and 600 to 749 as fair. Each lender sets its own minimum.
How can I check my Experian score for free?
Go to experian.in and use the free credit score option. Experian's FAQ says you can access unlimited free reports there during the year. It goes beyond the RBI's guarantee of one free full report per bureau each year.
Is the Experian score used by banks?
Yes. Experian is one of four RBI-registered credit bureaus, and every bank and NBFC must be a member of all four. Each lender decides which report to pull, and many check more than one.
How do I increase my Experian score?
Pay every bill by its due date and keep card use under 30% of your limit. Leave old accounts open and space out loan applications. Dispute any error you find. Results depend on what's on your report, so no timeline is guaranteed.
Why is my Experian score different from my CIBIL score?
Each bureau uses its own scoring model, and lenders don't always report to every bureau on the same day. A small gap is normal. A big one usually means one report has an error worth checking. Our guide to the credit bureaus in India explains the four side by side.
The Bottom Line
Your Experian score is as real as your CIBIL score. It uses the same 300 to 900 scale, and the same lenders report to it. Only the model differs a little. Check it free on experian.in, read the report behind it, and work on the two high-impact factors first: on-time payments and low card use. For a regular view of your Equifax report between those checks, GroScore tracks it monthly.
